CACAO TEA FROM THE MAYAN LANDS OF TUQTUQUILAL, GUATEMALA
Our Cacao Tea comes from Tuqtuquilal, in the heart of the Mayan Q’eqchi lands in Guatemala.
Once the cacao beans have undergone fermentation and natural drying, they are slightly toasted over an open fire. This is an ancient traditional practice which is still used today to connect to the fire and air elements, and to bring out the subtle flavours in the cacao.
These toasted beans are then hand-peeled to remove the outer protective layer called the husk. From here, the de-husked beans are put aside for sorting and grinding into our ceremonial-grade paste, while the remaining husks are packaged with love, ready for your cup.
The steps mentioned above (traditional toasting, de-husking, sorting, packaging) are done by the indigenous Mayan Q’eqchi women in the communities, empowering them with an income while creating opportunities to honour the ancient wisdom of their culture.
Just infuse the husks in hot water, create a quiet moment for yourself, and enjoy!
