Cacao Pilgrimage to Bali

Island of the gods…

Inspired by ancient cultures, we connect to the roots of this heart-opening medicine!

Thousands of years ago, native Mesoamerican civilisations considered cacao a sacred and ritualistic plant, which was consumed during virtually every ceremony of importance.

Spreading across the world this medicine made its way to Bali, and just like in ancient times, rituals with cacao are a tool to connect with the Self and with the spirits, to relax or stimulate the body, for internal discovery, for clearing the mind, for recharging the soul and healing stagnant emotions.

Over the years we have formed harmonious connections with the land, people and culture of Bali, Indonesia, and bring Ceremonial-grade Cacao from a cooperative of small-scale family farms in Bali to Africa.

We take an annual pilgrimage to the island of the gods for anyone wanting to connect with the beautiful energy of the Cacao trees, the culture, the surrounding jungle, and the community spirit.

Join Fran Siebrits for this unique and educational tree-to-cup experience. It promises to be nothing short of transformative with ceremonies, rituals, cacao farm visit, raw chocolate shop tour, workshops, community, nature, culture, joy, healing, focus, clarity, self-love, learning or relaxation… this pilgrimage is designed to accommodate you in whatever capacity you wish to consolidate the deep learning of your time with cacao.

A gift to yourself from yourself.

Why Bali?

The Balinese people treat the land with reverence and respect, living in a way which honours the ancient wisdom of Cacao. Their daily rituals are based on a cosmology which acknowledges the spirit in everything, and focusing on sacred reciprocity which assists us in reconnecting our hearts, to community, Mother Nature and Spirit.

Our founder, Fran Siebrits has travelled all over the globe, learning from different teachers across many traditions, infusing the rich cultural-spiritual diversity she lives, and weaving a tapestry of inter-connectedness in all our offerings at Cape Cacao, including this pilgrimage to what is referred to as the island of the gods: Bali.

Alongside paying homage to our African ancestry and the Mesoamerican origins and wisdom-keepers of Cacao, Fran has formed a deep spiritual connection with the land, people and culture of Bali. Over the years we have deepened these relationships, supporting the local communities by bringing Ceremonial-grade Cacao from a cooperative of small-scale family farms to South Africa.

We still support the same cooperative today, and take an annual pilgrimage to the Cacao farms in the Jembrana region of Western Bali to reconnect with the beautiful energy of the Cacao trees, the surrounding jungle, the culture, the farmers, and the community spirit.

Fran has since travelled to Guatemala on a spiritual pilgrimage. While there she was guided to connect with the Maya people who hold an ancient tradition, still living today, working with Cacao in a sacred way.

Her training and connection with the Maya continues, and well as her pilgrimages to Bali, to educate and share this ancient wisdom of Cacao in a sacred way. Through our Cacao Pilgrimage, we provide the opportunity for an experience at the heart of it all – the cacao tree – while immersing in the cultural beauty and lands of Bali.

What others have to say…

“My life shifted profoundly since landing back in South Africa after my Cacao Pilgrimage, and I still processing the integrating.

The Cacao Pilgrimage with Fran in Bali is such a deeply sacred and spiritual experience. It’s not easily put to words, because the transformation feels so gentle yet had immense impact on my life.

In Bali I experienced a world were everything is sacred. Where people move with a grace and an inherent kindest. A place and space my Spirit could breathe out.

The Cacao Pilgrimage for me was about finding deep connection within myself and with Mama Cacao… By connecting with the heart of the land she is grown in, to the beautiful people work with her fruit, then embracing her magic in Ceremony every day.

This plant medicine softly shifted my Spirit almost imperceivably, but nevertheless powerfully.

My Spirit is happy like a lingering hug that is soothed after a long embrace. There is a sense of peace and knowing of deep connection that is still ever present. What an experience!”

“Being guided by Fran has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. She is not only an incredible teacher and mentor, but also a deeply grounded and heart-led human being.

I had the gift of joining Fran on her Bali Pilgrimage — an experience that was truly life-changing. During that journey, she lovingly facilitated my wedding ceremony with my husband, and it was one of the most beautiful and authentic moments I’ve ever experienced. Everything she does is infused with realness, presence, and heart.

I hold deep respect and love for Fran. Her teachings continue to ripple through my life, guiding me gently back to myself. I am forever grateful for this journey and for all the ways she holds space with such care and soul.

Letitia Webber

“I loved learning more about cacao and participating in ceremonies and rituals. The mindfulness and breathwork we did, the alter-making and the closing ceremony was all an incredible experience.

The pilgrimage was a really transformative experience for me. I took a leap into the unknown, and it turned out to be a life-changing adventure filled with beautiful moments and memories that I will cherish forever.

One of the highlights was travelling to the jungle where the cacao is grown and taking part in a deep and meaningful cacao ceremony there. Surrounded by nature, I connected with cacao in a way that felt both ancient and entirely new. It opened up deeper levels of self-understanding and spiritual awareness for me.

Another highlight was the amazing cacao tasting excursion. Each taste revealed a new layer of flavours, deepening my appreciation for the complexity and richness of cacao.

We also got creative with altar-making, which was a reflective and intention-setting practice that strengthened my connection with nature.

Plus, the food we ate every day at the little cafes was absolutely delicious and nourishing – I think I miss the food the most!

This cacao pilgrimage wasn’t just a retreat, it was a profound journey into the heart of cacao and my own self. I left Bali with a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper connection to the natural world and so many wonderful memories and connections to such lovely people. Thank you so much to Fran for your beautiful energy and all the time, effort and love that went into creating such an incredible experience for us!

Kim Hubert (featured right in both photos)

“Fran is honestly one of the most special humans I have had the privilege to meet. Her dedication, passion and love for Mama Cacao echoed through our day to day meets and brought me so close to the medicine of the heart-a place I’ve thought I had gone to but actually had touch the surface of.

The way everything was laid out and planned gave me enough time in between experiencing the beautiful medicine of cacao and being able to enjoy the time I also had in Ubud. There was a great balance.

The tribe of ladies I met will always hold such a special place in my heart and I am forever changed.

I wish I could have had an entire month longer with Fran!

Frequently asked questions

Yes, this immersion is open for all levels. Come and learn all about this wonderful world of sacred chocolate with us!

Yes, absolutely. You are welcome to join to deepen your connection, to be held, and to learn from a different perspective. Each immersion brings its own magic, and we also working with the energies of Bali and its people, culture, and traditions. There is always something to learn from a new experience.

The immersion will be taking place in the quaint artist village called Penestanan – it is close to the centre of Ubud (a short 5-10 minute scooter-taxi ride or 20-30 minutes walk). We have chosen this area because of its beauty, peace and tranquility, so you may want to consider booking your accommodation in Penestanan for this reason and walk wherever you need to go. However, anywhere in Ubud is also fine as scooter-taxis are a very reliable mode of transport. If you look at an online maps of features in the area, you can narrow down your accommodation search within or around the triangle of Yellow Flower Cafe, Alchemy and Cafe Vespa. Some suggestions are Santra Putra Guesthouse and Gerebig Bungalows.

We have selected the Penestenan Village for our immersion becuase it is a beautiful area to walk from place to place. There are many accommodation options and eateries to choose from, so you really won’t need any other mode of transport that your own two feet if you arrange accommodation in the area (see our answer to the above FAQ). For getting somewhere quicker, or for a slightly further distance (i.e. going to Ubud aka into town) we recommend scooter taxis, which is the Balinese version of Uber. Car taxis are also available. You can download the app when you arrive (GoJek or Grab are two available ones). You can pay for each ride with cash when you are dropped at your destination.

Yes, it is safe to walk around by yourself, enjoying the day and night scenery. Bali is a very safe and friendly island.

We suggest booking a taxi pickup through your accommodation. However, it is safe to also get a taxi directly from the airport on arrival.

You don’t have to book the additional extras now. However, please note there are limited spots and we can only confirm a spot for you with a deposit on additional extras.

If you are not coming for the cacao, then come for the food! You will be blown away by the variety and quality of gastronomical offerings. The food in Bali is definitely a culinary highlight, and the area we will be based has a large variety of cafes and restaurants for all budgets.

All levels of health and fitness are welcome. We suggest bringing a good pair of walking shoes as there is a small amount of walking during our farm visit excursion, as well as around Penestanan Village for those who wish to enjoy the scenery on foot.

There is no age limit for this retreat… if your heart says yes, then you are welcome to join us.

Although Bali is a relatively small island, it has a lot to offer. From culture to adventure, parties to relaxing… so it really does depend on what you want to get out of it. We suggest doing a bit of google searching in your fields of interest, and narrowing it down from there. Even if you decide to stay in the area of Ubud, you will not run out of things to do.

The difference between regular cacao and ceremonial-grade cacao is the way it has been processed and prepared. On a purely practical level, for ceremonial cacao, the processing is kept as minimal and pure as possible. Freshly harvested beans are fermented and then dried, but never heavily roasted. The husks are removed from the dried beans to leave broken cacao nibs. These nibs are then ground into a thick paste. The paste is molded and cooled into solid blocks, then it’s ready to be used as ceremonial cacao. A block like this is similar to 100% chocolate with no sugar added, but it is created simply, without conching or tempering. The main intention is to leave the cacao in its most natural state, retaining all the precious nutrients and energies that cacao may offer, nothing added nor removed. Ceremonial-grade cacao is also of the highest energetic vibration due to intention, blessing rituals, and sacred practices along its tree-to-cup lifespan.

We will be working with some of the best cacao in the world, which is grown in Bali. Once the beans are delivered from the farm, they are dried, the shells removed and then ground at minimal temperatures to preserve the nutritional and biochemical integrity of the beans. Each stage of the process is performed with love and intention to create the most delicious and medicinally potent raw ceremonial-grade cacao that can be experienced. We believe this ceremonial-cacao is one of the world’s finest quality ceremonial-grade cacaos that exist. It is created to support personal growth, spiritual exploration, deep inspiration and connection with the Divine, according to each person’s own beliefs and practices.

Conventionally for the global mass chocolate industry, cacao beans are roasted at high temperatures to manipulate the taste of the beans. But we source freshly harvested cacao beans which are fermented, and then dried at low temperatures, but they are never roasted. This is because keeping cacao in its raw state preserves vital nutrients and live enzymes, maintaining an abundance of fiber and minerals such as zinc, magnesium & calcium, as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B9 and E, and essential heart-healthy fats, including a monounsaturated fat known as oleic acid. Raw cacao also has the highest antioxidant value of any natural food in the world, and up to four times higher than in roasted cacao. The nutrients found in ceremonial-grade cacao drinks and raw chocolate have been linked to a number of health benefits, including reduced blood pressure and improved circulation, promoting cardiovascular function, neutralizing free radicals, aiding digestion, reducing inflammation and enhancing physical and mental well-being. Safe to say, raw cacao is one of the most powerful superfoods nature has to offer.

The cacao beans are lightly broken (crushed) into nibs, and these are put through a grinding machine to produce a thick liquid called cacao liquor, which hardens into blocks at room temperature. The grinding process can take hours, or even days, until the desired fine texture and flavor profile has been reached. Traditionally, before machines, this process was done by hand on special stones for hand-grinding.
