Below, you’ll find everything you need to get started with preparing Cacao in a mindful and loving way, as well as how to go about a ritual meditation while drinking your Cacao. In this Starter Kit we’ve included our free mini workshop-series so you can join founder of Cape Cacao, Fran Siebrits, in her kitchen as she demonstrates two different methods to prepare Cacao.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO BEGIN
Give yourself enough time to prepare (indulge in this practice) and make it beautiful… to make beauty is to make sacred!
Have at least an hour to prepare, you can always adjust as you journey through more preparations. This part is as important as sitting in sacred ritual or ceremony, forming part of the practice.
Slowly and mindfully, take your time to prepare, drink and be.
Prepare your space…
- Practically prepare a sacred space to work AND a sacred space to drink your Cacao
- Cleans yourself and both these spaces
- Make offerings to the Cacao Spirit and to any other energies you work with by making the spaces beautiful.
- Light a candle to acknowledge the Great Mystery
- Invoke the Cacao Spirit with your voice, your offerings and your heart as you mindfully prepare your Cacao Ritual Drink
- Give thanks before moving to your sitting / meditation / Ceremony space
Useful tips & basic ingredients…
If you are not drinking your Cacao immediately (e.g. if you are still going to open your ritual and perform other chants / breathwork / cleansing / meditation / Shamanic practices) then pour it into a thermos flask to keep warm.
Bring the thermos and a clean cup to your sacred space where you will be sitting it so that you don’t have to interrupt the energy flow by getting up to get it when the time comes for the ritual Cacao drink.
For a basic, plain and pure Cacao drink, you’ll need:
- Ceremonial-grade Cacao
- 30g per person (ceremonial serving)
- Or between 20-40g, depending on the person
- Hot water (NOT boiling) to melt and mix with your Cacao
- Natural sweetener of choice e.g. coconut sugar/nectar, honey
Optional additions: salt, cinnamon, vanilla powder, cayenne pepper, chili, maca powder, mesquite powder

Cacao preparation method…
Not only is it important to prepare Cacao intentionally (such as the slow-brew method in this video), but also to source the best Cacao responsibly.
We use Ceremonial-grade Cacao, and recommend you do the same, as this is the highest quality and vibration, with energetic connections to the hands which grew and nurtured the Cacao as well as to the ancient wisdom of Cacao.

The slower manual method is a mindful and connected technique for preparing cacao for ritual and ceremony. Using the slow-brew method with minimal ingredients encourages us to take our time to be intentional and to connect to the spirit of cacao and our own hearts.
The faster blender method is a quick technique for an on-the-go nutritious superfood “hot chocolate”. Using electronic equipment and adding some extra ingredients is a fast way to prepare a nutritious and delicious on-the-go cacao drink.
Guided drinking ritual…
After preparing your Cacao, which is a ritual in itself, settle down in a quite, peaceful and sacred space that you have created for yourself (make this beautiful and sacred for yourself with candles, incense, flowers, herbs, crystals, shells, etc.).
In this next video Fran will activate the medicine in your Cacao with song, an invocation to call in the spirit of Cacao and activate the spiritual heart.
You will then sit quietly and sip your Cacao, while holding your intention in your heart, and allowing yourself to connect to your experience with total love and allowance.
Cacao is a plant medicine that has been used for thousands of years by indigenous cultures as a form of Shamanic Healing and as a way to deepen our connection to Mother Earth, community, and ourselves in a kind and embodied way.
