We have been partnering with Ubud Raw in Bali since 2019, bringing ceremonial-grade cacao to South Africa from the island of the gods, as Bali is respectfully referred to by the local people.

The Balinese culture has a special and sacred connection with Mother Nature and her elements, as well as to their traditional ways living and working with the land. The island and its cacao trees are prayed to daily, with multiple offerings given in sacred reciprocity. This continuous devotion is infused into the intentional, loving and careful handling of our ceremonial cacao from the trees right into your cup.

While cacao traditionally originates in Mesoamerica, the plant and its associated Spirit, ixCacao, thrive on the land and in the culture of Bali… there is a sacred reciprocity where people, land and spirit are respected in their ongoing cycles.

Fran has a special working relationship and friendship with Olivia, a local Indonesian woman manages Ubud Raw and supporting the relationship network between cacao lovers like us and the cacao farmers.

She knows all the people involved in the processes from soil to cup.

In conjunction with the Jembrana Cacao Farmers’ Cooperative, they have establish the newly formed Indonesian association, ACBI, which enables direct communication between government, cacao producers and craft chocolate makers, to ensure the sustainability of quality cacao beans in Indonesia.

When we pilgrimage to Bali, Olivia personally acts as our guide, taking us to visit the caca farms and cooperative, allowing us to experience every aspect of the “bean to bar” process firsthand. While also serving as translator to bridge the language barrier, we are able to form connections with the communities that provide us with cacao.

We are so grateful for these long-term partnerships and our annual pilgrimage to Bali to visit our cacao partners!
